It was to be the first Royal Visit to the area in an official capacity since the Duchess of Kent christened the new life boat in 1954, the video of which is available to view in the archive.

The film here documents the moment Princess Margaret arrived at the school to greet the crowds waiting outside the new building.

Although a royal visitor was anticipated, initial speculation existed as to who would perform the official duties, with some suggesting the Queen Mother would attend the opening. However, on June 4th 1962, it was announced that Princess Margaret would perform the opening ceremony on the day as part of a joint visit to both Fraserburgh and Peterhead.
