On the 7th August 1937, the “John and Charles Kennedy” was launched from Fraserburgh harbour for the first time. The boat was built with a fund of £5000 bequeathed to the RNLI by a Mrs Kennedy of Sussex upon her death in 1929, who asked for a first class lifeboat to be built and named ‘John and Charles Kennedy’, presumably in tribute to members of her family

The naming ceremony was captured on film by JB McDonald and features the guests and local dignitaries who attended the event. A huge crowd witnessed the ceremony and the day was marked by a performance from the Inverallochy pipe band. A Flag Day collection organised by the Fraserburgh branch of the Women’s Lifeboat Guild raised the significant sum of £77 on the day.
