The story of Codling Willie Whyte is a great example of a person interviewed by Jim Taylor who bore witness to the many changes which took place in the fishing industry over the years. As well as being from a long line of fishermen, Willie Whyte’s family kept the tradition alive and also worked aboard boats. Although members of the Whyte family, like many others, all worked in the same industry, the jobs and roles undertaken by generation each over the years would have been very different and having a recorded document of these changes from the people who witnessed them first hand is an invaluable piece of the social and cultural history of the North East of Scotland.
