In 1986, Rev. Birnie was involved in a fundraising bid to commission a memorial for Jane Whyte at New Aberdour beach. Jane Whyte, known as the ‘Grace Darling of the North’ saved the lives of the six crewmen of the Dundee steamer, ‘William Hope’, that fell in to trouble off the coast of New Aberdour bay shortly after leaving Fraserburgh harbour on the 28th October 1884. She was given the RNLI medal and £10 for her bravery. The story has been given further recognition in 2019 with an exhibition at The Museum of Scottish Lighthouses that runs until July 2020.
