Ninety-eight calls to sea saw the the ‘John and Charles Kennedy’ save the lives of a hundred and ninety-nine people. However, the 9th of February 1953 would be its last trip to sea. When escorting a yawl back to the harbour through a rough swell, a huge wave struck the vessel at the breakwater, capsizing the boat. Tragically the lives of six crewmen, Andrew Ritchie, George Flett Duthie, Charles Tait Snr., John Buchan and John Crawford were all lost in the incident. Charles Tait, son of bowman Charles Tait Snr. was the sole survivor of the terrible incident.
