Originally from Rosehearty, Jim Slater spent most of his life at sea or working within the politics and governance of the Scottish fishing industry. He was known as one of the most successful pelagic fisherman in the country, a one time chairman of the Scottish Pelagic Producers Association, chaired the North East Fisherman’s Training Association and served on several Maritime and Coastguard Agency safety advisory committees. Awarded an MBE in 1995 for services to the fishing industry, he was joint chairman of the Pesca fund in Grampian which distributed European grants to the sector and played a key role in negotiating an EU deal for the UK’s herring and mackerel fishermen.

Within this interview he discusses the importance of the pelagic fleet to the Scottish industry and how he became involved with the political side of fishing.
